First Service & RE

Rev. Dr. Nicole Kirk, Frank and Alice Schulman Chair of Unitarian Universalist history at Meadville-Lombard Theological School in Chicago, will open our 2013-2014 season with a talk entitled, The Importance of Religious Community on a Homecoming Sunday.  Across the county, Unitarian Universalist congregations gather for homecoming Sunday to inaugurate the church year—the community re-dedicates itself to its purpose, Sunday school resumes, and projects are planned. This Sunday we will begin with a water communion ritual and reflect on the importance and power of religious community through hospitality.

Rev. Kirk is a candidate to receive the Doctor of Philosophy degree in American church history from Princeton Theological Seminary and received a Doctor of Ministry degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in May 2007.  While at Princeton, Rev. Kirk also lectured in the University’s Religion Department and has conducted research in association with the eminent early Christian historian Elaine Pagels of the Princeton religion faculty.  Ms. Kirk received her undergraduate degree in Religious Studies from Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, and a Masters of Divinity degree and an award for outstanding achievement in Biblical Studies from Vanderbilt University Divinity School.  She was ordained in 1999 by East Shore Unitarian Universalist Church in Kirtland, Ohio, and was their parish minister from 1998 to 2006.  She is also a member of the Prairie Group, a UU ministers study group.

Reminder: Water Ceremony

We will perform our sixth annual Water Ceremony at the first service of the year on September 8.  During this short ceremony members are invited to come forward and pour their collected water into a communal vessel symbolizing the unity of our group and our reunification after our summer travels.  Everyone is asked to say where their water came from (one place only, please).  A pitcher of water will be provided for those who do not have the actual water from their destination.
