How Mindfulness Changes Lives

Guest Speaker: Dr. Robert FarraPsychologist, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, NorthShore University HealthSytem

In this talk, Dr. Farra will discuss how Mindfulness can help us increase our awareness about where our thoughts and attention are focused, and to work toward keeping our focus in the present moment.  Depression is often related to judging oneself about things that have occurred in the past, and anxiety tends to focus on “worst case scenarios” for the future.  In either of these situations, all we are doing is increasing our emotional distress over situations that we cannot control or change, all the while missing out on the present moment.  The powerful practice of Radical Acceptance will be discussed and how this practice profoundly changes one’s family life.

In addition to his work at North Shore University Health System, Dr. Farra is Clinician Educator at the Pritzker School of Medicine, University of Chicago.  He received his B.S. from Emerson College, his M.S. in Social Work from the Univ. of Tennessee, a Diplomate in Gerontology from the Institute of Social Research at Florida State University and his Ph.D. in Family Systems Theory and Therapy from Florida State University.  In his work, he provides diagnostic assessments and treatments for children, adolescents, adults, couples and families using Evidence Based Strategies.  Also, he provides Cognitive Behavioral group therapy for patients with mood swings and anxiety disorders. His leadership in outpatient psychotherapy and community outreach covers a three-county region.
